New CD: Grundestein by Layers

Two of my compositions, angustia (flute, violin, accordion and optional fixed-media electronics) and ‘We lived in the gaps between the stories.’ (graphic score for amplified accordion) features on Polish ensemble Layers‘ new album Grundestein! “Grundgestein”, czyli “warstwa macierzysta”, to podstawa, baza, od której zaczynaliśmy jako trio muzyki współczesnej. Pierwsze lata naszej działalności to czas intensywnego poszukiwania i tworzenia repertuaru. Wszystko zaczęło się od agresywnego “Layers” Ryszarda Lubienieckiego z 2014 r., którego tytuł dał nazwę zespołowi. W latach 2015-2016 pisali już dla nas inni kompozytorzy: Alannah Halay w “Angustii” zaproponowała podejście minimalistyczne, Josué Amador wirtuozerię ze sporą dawką improwizacji w “Unity”, a Piotr Bednarczyk barwne i nieprzewidywalne “Stanie się”. Ryszard Lubieniecki przystosował dla tria swoje “Die Antilärmbewegung II”, pełne niestabilnych i mikrotonowych współbrzmień. Album uzupełniają utwory solowe: miniatura Dominika Karskiego na flet solo (“112 Iphigenia”), stanowiąca zwięzłą syntezę unikalnego stylu tego kompozytora, inspirowana “Opowieścią Podręcznej” Margaret Atwood partytura graficzna Alannah Halay na akordeon (“We lived in the gaps between the stories”), oraz amplifikowany “Phenotype” Wojtka Blecharza na preparowane skrzypce.

“Grundgestein” (“bedrock”) is a foundation, a ground layer, from which we started as a trio of contemporary music. The first years of our work were a time of intensive exploration and the creation of a new repertoire. Everything began with the noisy piece “Layers” (2014) by Ryszard Lubieniecki, whose title gave the name for the ensemble. In 2015-2016 other composers have written for us: Alannah Halay in “Angustia” proposed the minimalistic approach, Josué Amador in “Unity” virtuosity with a lot of improvisation, and Piotr Bednarczyk rich and unpredictable “Stanie się”. Ryszard Lubieniecki prepared for the trio special version of his “Die Antilärmbewegung II”, the piece that is full of unstable and microtonal harmonies. On the album solo pieces are also included: the miniature for solo flute by Dominik Karski (“112 Iphigenia”), capturing the unique style of this composer, the graphic score for accordion by Alannah Marie Halay (“We lived in the gaps between the stories”), inspired by Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”, and amplified “Phenotype” for prepared violin by Wojtek Blecharz.
