My opera Pacific Pleasures will be performed next on 13th February at the Cineteatro Louletano.

Staged by Jorge Balça and conducted by Maestro Pablo Urbina, Tahiti! brings together two operas: Pacific Pleasures (2016–17) by Alannah Marie Halay and Trouble in Tahiti (1952) by Leonard Bernstein. The performance features five classical singers — Inês Constantino (mezzo-soprano), Leonel Pinheiro (tenor), Ricardo Panela (baritone), Rui Baeta (baritone), and Sofia Marafona (soprano) — alongside puppeteers Ana Rebelo and Luís Godinho / S.A. Marionetas, with the Orquestra do Algarve.

Tahiti! é uma ‘double bill’ da ópera Trouble in Tahiti (1952) de Leonard Bernstein e de Pacific Pleasures (2016-17) de Alannah Marie Halay com libreto de Jorge Balça. Pacific Pleasures terá a sua estreia nacional com esta produção. Num subúrbio residencial como tantos outros, Tahiti! conta a história de um jovem casal, Sam e Dinah, que descobrem que tudo o que sempre quiseram, não os fez felizes. Têm ainda de encontrar o seu Tahiti. Esta produção recorre a uma variedade de estratégias e ferramentas dramáticas, como teatro físico e teatro de marionetas que, em colaboração com o MAC/CCB, são inspiradas na obra de Paula Rego. Tahiti! imagina uma vida para as duas personagens principais antes da ópera de Bernstein, que começa com uma discussão. Como é que Sam e Dinah se tornaram tão infelizes? E até que ponto as suas vidas já estavam mapeadas antes de eles as começarem a viver? E quanto domínio é que eles realmente têm sobre as suas vidas? Com este projecto pretende-se levar Tahiti! a territórios, públicos, teatros e auditórios do Algarve onde geralmente o espetáculo operático encenado, não costuma circular. Tahiti! is a double bill of the opera Trouble in Tahiti (1952) by Leonard Bernstein and Pacific Pleasures (2016–17) by Alannah Marie Halay, with a libretto by Jorge Balça. Pacific Pleasures will receive its national premiere in this production. Set in a residential suburb like so many others, Tahiti! tells the story of a young couple, Sam and Dinah, who discover that everything they have always wanted has not made them happy. They still have to find their own Tahiti. This production employs a variety of dramatic strategies and theatrical tools, such as physical theatre and puppet theatre which, in collaboration with MAC/CCB, are inspired by the work of Paula Rego. Tahiti! imagines a life for the two central characters before Bernstein’s opera, which begins with an argument. How did Sam and Dinah become so unhappy? To what extent were their lives already mapped out before they began living them? And how much control do they really have over their lives? With this project, the aim is to bring Tahiti! to towns, audiences, theatres, and auditoriums across the Algarve where fully staged opera does not usually tour. This is a performance for everyone.
